As a reminder, Online microfinance is part of the broader trend of peer-to-peer lending. Loans are made with a strong social interest from funders (mostly in developped countries) to entrepreneurs (mostly in emerging countries).

There are several types of p2p lending platforms :

• Lending platforms with a social objective that provide funding for projects
supported by MFIs (microfinance institutions) without financial remuneration,

• Platforms for transactions between family members who provide assistance through private
lending contracts

• Lending platforms with a financial objective, which allow individual investors to make
interest-bearing loans to other individuals.

Kiva.org is the first web platform to acquire strong presence around the world. It is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty.
